How Intensive Driving Courses Work

How intensive courses work

From first enquiry to
full licence, step by step.

An intensive course condenses months of weekly lessons into a focused block of one-to-one tuition, so you reach test-ready in days or weeks, not a year. Here's exactly how the whole journey works, who's responsible for what, and what to expect at every stage.

DVSA-approved instructors Manual & automatic 7 days a week, 7am–7pm Theory support included England, Scotland & Wales
The basics

What is an intensive driving course?

Instead of a single hour-long lesson each week stretched over six months to a year, an intensive course packs your tuition into concentrated sessions over a much shorter period.

Because you're driving day after day rather than week after week, less is forgotten between sessions, so skills build faster and stick. You still get the same DVSA-approved one-to-one teaching; it's simply delivered in a focused block built around your schedule.

  • Faster momentum. Frequent practice means you keep what you learn instead of re-learning it each week.
  • Weeks, not months. Reach test-ready in a tight timeframe, ideal if you need your licence sooner.
  • Matched to your level. From a short final polish to a full beginner programme, you do the right number of hours, never more.
The whole journey

Beginning to finish, in nine steps.

Who does what

Clear roles, no grey areas.

An intensive course involves four parties. Knowing who's responsible for what keeps everything running smoothly, and it's why we're always upfront about the bits that are yours to do.

You

  • Book and pay for your DVSA theory & practical tests
  • Hold a valid provisional licence
  • Turn up, practise and put the hours in

GetMyPass

  • Match you to the right instructor & course
  • Coordinate your schedule & be your point of contact
  • Help you find an early test date & watch for cancellations

Your instructor

  • Deliver your one-to-one, DVSA-approved tuition
  • Run your mock test and confirm you're test-ready
  • Provide the car for tuition and your test

The DVSA

  • Sets and runs the theory & practical tests
  • The examiner decides your result on the day
  • Issues your full driving licence once you pass

A note on tests: by law, we can't book your theory or practical test for you, and the test fees are always yours, paid directly to the DVSA. What we can do is help you secure an early date and make sure you're properly prepared for it.

Pace & timing

Two ways to run your course.

The same hours, the same teaching, the same all-inclusive price, the only choice is how tightly you want to pack them. We build it around your life.

Most popular

Fully intensive

Your hours packed into a tight block, often a week or two. The fastest route to test-ready, ideal if you need your licence soon or learn best with full immersion.

1–2 weeks Fastest to test Full immersion
Around your life

Semi-intensive

The same hours spread over a few weeks, fitted around work, school or family. Still far quicker than weekly lessons, with more breathing room between sessions.

How many hours?

The honest answer: it depends on you.

There's no one-size-fits-all number. The less driving experience you have, the more hours you'll want, so we match the course to your level rather than selling you hours you don't need.

~45Hours, on average

DVSA research suggests learners need around 45 hours of professional tuition (plus private practice) to reach test standard. That's a guide, not a rule, our four course tiers run from a short top-up to a full beginner programme so you land on the right amount.

Advanced and Elite describe the depth of the course, not your ability. If you've never driven, Elite is for you, more hours, more support. Nearly there? Provisional is the lighter, lower-cost polish.

Is it right for you?

Honest about the fit.

Intensive courses suit most learners brilliantly, but not every situation. Here's a straight view, so you can decide with your eyes open.

A great fit if you…

  • Want your licence soon, a new job, uni, or life that needs you on the road quickly.
  • Learn better with momentum, driving often, so nothing's forgotten between sessions.
  • Can free up a block of time, a week or two, or a few focused weeks around work.
  • Want a clear plan and price, everything mapped out, with one point of contact.

Maybe not, if you…

  • Can't free up concentrated time right now, though semi-intensive may still work.
  • Prefer a very gentle pace with long gaps to absorb things between lessons.
  • Haven't got your provisional yet, you'll need it before any tuition can start.

Common questions

How it works, answered.

You must pass the DVSA theory test before you can sit your practical. You book and pay for the theory test yourself with the DVSA. Theory training support is included with your course to help you prepare, and we'll guide you on timing so it doesn't hold up your practical.
No, you book your own DVSA practical and theory tests, and the test fees are paid by you directly to the DVSA. What we do is help you secure an early date by watching for cancellations and short-notice slots, and make sure you walk in fully prepared.
It depends on how much experience you already have. A near test-ready learner might need only a short top-up over a few days, while a complete beginner needs more hours over a week or two. Your course is matched to your level, so you do the right amount, never more than you need.
Yes. We arrange both manual and automatic tuition. An automatic licence only lets you drive automatics; a manual licence lets you drive both. We'll talk you through which suits you when we match you with an instructor.
We never put you in for a test before your instructor believes you're ready. The DVSA examiner decides on the day and we can't guarantee a pass, but if you need a little more practice or a re-sit, we'll help you arrange further hours and a new test date.
A fully intensive course packs your hours into a tight block, often a week or two, to get you test-ready fast. A semi-intensive course spreads the same hours over a few weeks so it fits around work, school or family. The teaching and what's included are identical; only the pace changes.
